Empowering athletes through mental performance training.
Ava Kaylor Performance is dedicated to enhancing the mental and emotional well-being of athletes through sport psychology. My goal is to help athletes develop the mental skills and resilience needed to perform at their best, overcome challenges, and achieve their full potential. I work closely with athletes to provide personalized strategies for managing performance anxiety, building confidence, setting goals, and maintaining focus during high-pressure situations. My approach is rooted in understanding the unique psychological demands of sports and tailoring my interventions to meet the individual needs of each athlete.
My mission is simple: to help athletes train their minds with the same intention they train their bodies. Because strong athletes aren't just physically prepared-they're mentally ready.

Ava offers one-on-one sessions that are individualized to fit your performance needs. Whether you are seeking to maximize an already high level of performance, are underperforming and want to improve, or are dealing with personal issues that interfere with your success, individual sessions provide you with the opportunity to discuss your situation in more depth and receive individual solutions.
Individual sessions are typically an hour long and generally occur on a once per week basis, though the frequency of meetings will depend on your situation and needs. We work together in-person and/or via zoom.
Athletes will learn practical mental skills such as goal setting, confidence building, focus strategies, emotional regulation, and competition preparation. individual sessions create a supportive space for athletes to develop the mindset needed to handle pressure, overcome setbacks, and perform at your best when it matters most.

A championship team is more than the sum of its parts, it's greater than the individual players and coaches. a championship team is defined by its ability to work together to achieve a common goal and often exceeds expectations.
Mental Training for teams is both pro-active and preventative. Teams will focus on building team cohesion, improving communication, fostering team commitment, and refining team goals. Each team/group program is tailored to your team's specific needs, goals, and budget.

I am a former two-sport NCAA athlete, volleyball scholarship competitor, and sport psychology professional passionate about helping athletes strengthen their mindset and elevate their performance.
I grew up in Northern VA, where my love for competition began in both volleyball and swimming. that passion carried me to the collegiate level, where I competed in the MEC and experienced firsthand the pressure, expectations, setback, and breakthroughs that come with high-level sport.
Though my own athletic journey, I learned something powerful: physical training alone isn't enough. The difference-maker is often mental. That realization led me to earn my Master’s degree in Sport Psychology and dedicate my career to helping athletes build the mental skills they need to perform with confidence and resilience.
Today I work with athletes who want more than just talent - they want composure under pressure, the ability to bounce back from mistakes, and the confidence to trust themselves when it matters most. My approach blends evidence-based mental performance strategies with real-world athletic experience. I understand the nerves before competition, the frustration of injury, and the drive to win- because I've lived it.
outside of working with athletes, i enjoy spending time with my husband, our three kids, and our dog. As a lifelong athlete, staying active is still a big part of my life. in my free time, you can often find me playing pickle ball or volleyball, cheering on my kids, or swimming at the lake during the summer. My passion for sport extends beyond my work, and I value creating a balanced life centered around family, movement, and the joy of competition.

Mental skills training (MST), also known as sports psychology is similar to physical training and that the goal is to prepare you to consistently perform at your best. Mental skills training focuses on teaching you how to control your mind, efficiently and consistently as you execute sport related goals. It’s a valuable tool that aids and understanding how the mind influences performance apply strategies to optimize performance and remove mental blocks that keep you from performing at your best.
Whether its preparation, motivation, staying composed, performing in competition, or overcoming barriers, mental training can help you improve concentration, mental toughness, efficiency, and focus. Mental Training is for the athlete or team that is ready to take control of their mental game. Spending time working on your mental game and making that apart of your training may be just what you (or your team) need to perform more consistently.
Whether working with an individual client or a sports team/group or organization, we begin any consultation with an assessment to determine the specific needs of the individual or group. The purpose of the first session is to begin to establish a trusting, positive relationship and to learn about your current situation and performances. I may also have you complete a variety of performance assessments that will help me better understand your approach to competition and identify the areas in which you can improve.
Following the assessment we conduct during the initial meeting, we provide you with an individualized plan in which we detail how we can help you achieve your performance goals. Throughout the planning process, I will work collaboratively with you, drawing on your strengths as well as your knowledge of yourself and your performance abilities. Through this collaboration, we establish challenging, but realistic goals that will help you make the necessary changes to be successful in your performances and in life.
For our work with you to be successful, it's essential that you - stay actively involved, always follow through on assignments given, provide honest feedback regarding your performances and the changes you are making in your life, and be willing to share openly about yourself, your performances, and your goals.
Generally, ongoing sessions take place weekly or bi-weekly and last around 45-50 minutes each. However, we may decide that fewer, or more frequent, sessions would be best. This will depend on your situation and goals.
While sport and performance psychology is not a series of magic tricks, or a instant cure for performance obstacles, the tools used in mental training sessions have been used by everyone from champions to recreational athletes, to performers and creative artists at every level. How long the process of developing a strong mind set will depend on what areas of performance you are looking to develop or what barriers you are looking to overcome.
Keep in mind that you will have to be willing to practice what we talk about on your own in order to see results. Mental training will provide you with the resources that you can use to enhance your sport, but just like physical training, it takes practice to see success. Some people find that they only need a few sessions to meet their goals, while others prefer more consistent meetings over time.
Whatever your sport or performance needs, we can get a feel for how long the process will take during our initial session.
Whether you're an athlete, parent, or coach interested in mental performance training, I'd love to hear from you. Fill out the contact form below and I'll be in touch soon to answer your questions and see how I can help support your goals.
